Elegance at Sea: An Authentic Viking Ocean Cruises Review

viking cruise reviews

I recently received notification they are changing flights (with layovers) and we won't arrive to the ship 15 minutes before required arrival time (No room for error). I called and they cannot get me back on the original direct flight, yet they want you to pay $100.00 per person to make any changes. I checked Delta direct flights we were originally booked on and there are many seats still available. I did reach out to our booking agent (Thiago Luff) He is very helpful but explained because Viking air is a different entity, he had to refer me to Viking Air +. I feel l could have booked my own or with another travel professional and my travel arrangements would feel a bit more secure. One of the excursions we took was completely misrepresented–fewer than half of the promised activities occurred, and those that did were sad excuses for the kinds of things one can reasonably expect.

Premium Viking Ocean Cruises Shore Excursions

I wouldn’t say there’s a “best” European cruise per se, but there are a couple main rivers in Europe that offer river cruise experiences. The most popular are the Rhine River, the Elba and the Danube. And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service. Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

Our Viking program director gave a guided audio tour along the way, pointing out castles left and right. Heidelberg is a university town with a energetic, small town feel. We had a wonderful guide for this day who guided us throughout the small canals, pointing out colorful streets and letting us know about Strasbourg’s tangled history in the hands of Germany and France.

Another failure with Viking Air

If you're sure that Viking is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. Ten-night "Greek Odyssey" voyages to the Greek Islands start at $3,999 per person. That works out to roughly $800 per day for a couple sharing a room. Some of the line's more exotic sailings, such as its expedition trips to Antarctica, cost even more. Fourteen-night Antarctica trips start at $13,995 per person — about $2,000 per day for a couple. You'll also find musicians including pianists and guitar players performing at times in the Viking Living Room — a three-deck-high, atrium-like space at the center of the ship.

We are cancelling our river cruise due to viking's heavy handed covid vaccine requirement. NEVER BUY A VIKING CRUISE VOUCHERWe will be sailing with a different cruise line and will not be back to Viking. Viking has lost four loyal customers with 10 past cruises between us. Also unlike many other cruises or guided tours, almost everything was included, which made it feel like a truly relaxing vacation.

The latter is something relatively few lines roll into their base fares, and shore excursions can be expensive. As part of Viking's "no nickel-and-diming" philosophy, the line offers free Wi-Fi service to passengers on all its ships throughout sailings. Note that internet service can be slow at times of heavy use, as is typical on cruise vessels. In addition, in order to ensure fair usage for all, the line limits some heavy-bandwidth applications, downloads and software upgrades. For this subset of travelers, Viking offers a wide range of both ocean and river cruise itineraries that have a heavy focus on the destinations visited. A cruise on Viking Sea focuses heavily on destinations, and passengers are entitled to one included excursion in each port the ship visits.

Moving on to amenities, Viking Cruises offers a range of options to keep passengers entertained and relaxed. Your sailing will always come with complimentary Wi-Fi; house wines, beers, and soft drinks with onboard lunches and dinners; coffee and hot tea available 24/7; and self-service launderettes. Viking Cruises also offers a range of wellness and fitness options on board, including a spa, fitness center, and yoga classes. The company's ocean ships feature a Nordic-inspired thermal suite with a snow grotto, heated loungers, and a sauna. All of these are part of the "Viking Inclusive Value" . As a seasoned traveler and occasional cruiser, I believe I am well-equipped to provide insights into the Viking Oceans Cruise experience.

Fellow Passengers

Passengers can grab a snack — with a Norwegian twist — at the forward-facing lounges atop the ships, which are home to a small food counter called Mamsen's. The number of restaurants and other dining options that you'll find on Viking ships will vary greatly depending on whether you are sailing on an ocean or a river ship. Other little touches in Viking cabins that show a line thinking about functionality as much as decor include the large and clear lettering on the Freyja toiletries that you'll find in every Viking cabin bathroom.

Day 4: Heidelberg, Germany

They saved themselves 90% of my payment–and lost 2 customers for life. There are many other cruise lines that do take care about whom they entrust their guests to and do care about their guests’ satisfaction–stick to them and avoid Viking. We’re in a mid-level cabin, Deluxe Veranda, which is narrow, but has a lot of storage and a roomy bathroom with a great shower. (Not always the case on cruise ships!) I haven’t seen the other category staterooms but know the next step up – Penthouse Veranda- offers a few more feet in width and a fridge stocked with wine, beer, etc. Still, as is typical for cruise lines at the high end, Viking includes a lot in its base price.

Holland America Line, one of nine cruise lines owned by Carnival ... Viking Ocean Cruises aims to provide value for money. The cost of the cruise, considering the inclusions and amenities, is competitive in the cruise industry. With the cruise cost including full use of the spa, the entertainment, and wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, we felt that we got excellent value for our money. A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. An agent can also help you if something goes wrong before, during or after your voyage.

I had a reservation for the Heart of Delta Cruise including premium economy for the air portion. I was advised after booking and making my deposit that I was being downgraded to economy. I then called and was told if I wanted premium economy I would now have to pay a higher price. This is called bait and switch and is unethical if not down right fraudulent. It’s really clear on-board that Viking don’t skimp out on customer service and they all added up to make a seamless vacation.

Booked a cruise with Viking (which was listed as requiring $25 down to book). Shortly thereafter, Viking wanted full payment for a cruise 1 year in the future. Therefore, Viking is holding full payment and collecting interest on the funds. This appears to be a new money making mechanism by Viking using their client's money to increase their cash flow. All the local guides were quite knowledgeable and Viking provides headsets so you can clearly hear.

But three days before we arrived in Manaus, guest services still had no idea what time we’d be disembarking, what hotel we would be brought to, and when we needed to get to the airport. Needless to say, we couldn’t book our tour and spent 6 hours in a hotel conference room before our flight. Some Viking ships, including all of the line's ocean vessels (including its one expedition vessel), have self-serve launderettes on cabin decks with washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards. The launderettes are stocked with detergent for the washing machines that, unlike on many cruise ships with launderettes, do not come with an extra cost. Just behind the main pool area on each of the ocean ships is a lovely, glass-topped lounge with comfortable seating called the Wintergarden that is home to afternoon tea.

They canceled 5 out of 9 stops on our Iceland, Greenland Canada to New York Cruise. I heard they got a dent from a tug pushing them into the dock and it is their brand new ship, Saturn. Their inaugural celebration is in New York after we disembark. Could it be that they don't want more dents before the inaugural? Also heard that they canceled our Newfoundland stop because they didn't have a docking space. We're paying $1200 to board our dogs for this crummy trip.

What Is Adaptive Cruise Control? Driver-Assistance Tech Explained

what is adaptive cruise control

Although the state of autonomous driving today is Level 2, a few carmakers are on the precipice of Level 3. For example, Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot, Ford’s BlueCruise, the Mercedes Drive Pilot, and General Motors’ Super Cruise bring the potential for Level 3. A few over-the-air software tweaks will turn the potential into reality. However, like a stood-up date who is all dressed up with nowhere to go, you will not find Level 3-designated highways as of yet. We won’t take you through all levels of driving automation. They begin with no automation and wrap up with full automation, including vehicles without pedals or steering wheels.

Can I Add Adaptive Cruise Control to My Car?

Although the fuel savings were minimal, both claims were accurate. General Motors autonomous car unit, Cruise, has started to offer driverless rides to residents of San Francisco as it moves toward the launch of a full-fledged robo-taxi service. Radar-based sensors can be hidden behind plastic fascias; however, the fascias may look different from a vehicle without the feature.

What Carmakers Call Their Adaptive Cruise Control Systems

It can use radar, laser, binocular computer vision systems, a forward-aimed camera, or some combination of these technologies to track the traffic ahead of your vehicle. It senses when that traffic flow slows or stops, reacting to maintain the preset following distance. Mercedes offers one of the most comprehensive adaptive cruise control and driver-assistance suites of any automaker. Its latest Distronic Plus system can keep up with traffic, but also brake the car to a full stop in stop-and-go situations.

Mercedes-Benz

The complexity of adaptive cruise control systems puts them beyond the reach of the aftermarket. Radar-based ACC is often sold together with a precrash system,[43] which warns the driver and/or provides brake support if there is a high risk of a collision. Also in certain cars, it is incorporated with a lane maintaining system which provides a power steering assist to reduce steering input burden on corners when the cruise control system is activated.

Radar (Probably) Won't Save Your Life.

Posted: Mon, 19 Feb 2024 08:00:00 GMT [source]

The system then assumes control of the accelerator, maintaining the set speed until the driver engages the brake. Every ACC system works slightly differently, says Kelly Funkhouser, manager for vehicle technology at CR. For example, the Hyundai Elantra SEL ($22,795 with destination fee) offers its Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go in its optional Convenience Package ($1,900). It also includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Junction-Turning Detection, navigation, wireless phone charging, heated front seats, and more. On the other hand, the same ACC system is standard for the $27,395 Elantra Limited. Is anyone surprised that carmakers can’t seem to agree on a single term for adaptive cruise control?

Multi-sensor systems

ACC systems allow you to set a desired speed until your vehicle encounters slower-moving traffic. Then it will brake to maintain a set distance from the car ahead. Once the traffic starts moving again or if there is no longer a car in the lane ahead, ACC will accelerate to resume the previous set speed. Although ACC systems may take some getting used to, our survey respondents told us they appreciated the stress relief the feature brings.

By the early 1990s, Japanese carmakers were adding a form of forward collision warning to their cruise control, but it was still up to the driver to react and apply the brakes. Not until Mercedes-Benz developed its Distronic cruise control did cruise control with self-braking make its first public appearance. Simple to use, all you need to do is turn on the system in your vehicle, reach your desired cruising speed, and set it.

what is adaptive cruise control

Mercedes Distronic Plus

Installation cost depends on the sophistication of the system and the vehicle model. This is particularly true if you do a lot of highway driving. Moreover, the more sophisticated systems with full stop and start or a low-speed traffic-jam feature work great for city driving. Typically, ACC gets included in a trim level or some sort of optional driver-assistance package on new cars.

For example, Mercedes-Benz packages the radar behind the upper grille in the center and behind a solid plastic panel that has painted slats to simulate the look of the rest of the grille. Not all systems work at low speeds, so drivers who plan to use ACC in slow traffic should check the limitations of any system they plan to buy. These particular systems will often have the words “traffic jam” or “stop and go” in their name.

” We can sort of forgive Mercedes for its Distronic cruise control. Some call it adaptive cruise control as the root and then tack something onto it. When carmakers pitched cruise control to the American public more than half a century ago, they framed it as a way to maintain a safe, consistent speed on the highway and a path to conserving fuel.

The driver must be prepared to resume control in case of an emergency but otherwise doesn’t have command of the car. That is, the driver’s hands can be off the steering wheel and their attention elsewhere. In addition to following traffic and automatically keeping a car in its lane, Autopilot can execute lane changes with the flick of a turn signal, and negotiate some highway off-ramps. Tesla’s ability to pull data from cars using the system and launch over-the-air software updates means Autopilot has significant potential to improve over time. Like systems available from other automakers, Cadillac’s Super Cruise allows the car to accelerate, steer, and brake without driver intervention on highways. But Cadillac is the only automaker to specifically claim that drivers can take their hands off the wheel.

GPS data can inform the system of geographic features such as a freeway offramp. A camera system could notice driver behavior such as brake lights and/or a turn signal. The systems use lasers, radar, cameras, or a combination of those. If traffic slows to a stop, most ACC systems will bring the car to a complete stop, then bring it back up to speed when traffic gets going again. Others work only within certain speeds and/or might not start to accelerate automatically.

Book a Cruise Online with the Best Cruise Finder and Cruise Booking Website

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent to book a cruise is getting great advice. A cruise specialist can guide you to the right cruise line and ship based on your vacation preferences and goals for the trip. There are several benefits to using a travel agent to book your cruise. In fact, a majority of cruisers use a travel agent, whether a local agency or an online booking website, to book their cruise.

Video: How to Book a Cruise: Should You Book Direct with the Cruise Line, Travel Agent or Online

United Airlines MileagePlus members can earn up to 25,000 miles when booking a cruise through United at Cruises.United.com. Members get up to 10,000 miles on most cruises and up to 100,000 miles on luxury cruises. Plus, the site waives deposits on eligible cruise reservations. We think so as they can help you look at every cruise available to find one that fits.

You’re our first priority.Every time.

Book 6 months to a year, or more, before your cruise for access to these special rates. In most cases, larger agencies or franchises have huge influence and buying power with the cruise line. This can mean better pricing on some cruises and/or some extra perks or amenities. You can also ask to receive the booking confirmation from the cruise line, showing payments, for your records. Cruise specialists are also aware of more than one cruise line, and for avid or repeat cruisers, this can be especially useful.

And, no matter how many ports you visit on your cruise, you only have to pack once. It may sound like a dream come true, but that's exactly what cruising is like. To recap, in this article we’ve gone through the benefits of booking with a travel agent for a cruise, as well the disadvantages. In addition, we’ve also gone through what to look for in a travel agent and what questions to ask.

What to Look for in a Cruise Travel Agent

direct cruise lines

Third-party booking platforms, on the other hand, may have stricter refund policies. They often have their own terms and conditions, which may differ from the cruise line’s policies. It’s important to carefully review the refund policies of both direct and third-party booking platforms before making a decision. TripAdvisor is an online reviewer community where travelers share their experiences, pictures and ratings of hotels, suggested activities and more.

Yes, last-minute deals can be the best way to book a cruise. If your travel plans are flexible, these deals can save you a lot of money. Keep in mind that you may not be able to book your preferred destination or routing if it is sold out. You can get even more perks by booking your cruise with the right card.

Each and every island that makes up the Caribbean has its own “essence”, its own “flavor.”  How could anyone choose to visit just one, and why would you want to? Sample the underwater treasures in Belize, savor the cuisine of St Maarten, and relish the natural beauty of Jamaica. Dozens of sun-drenched islands bordered by white sand beaches dot the Caribbean Sea, and each one is unique. There are small, quiet islands perfect for relaxing by the ocean and larger ones that thrive on the hustle and bustle of activity. Some are lush, tropical rain forests while others are arid deserts cooled by soft trade winds. If you’re the group leader, you can concentrate on the fun stuff, like matching t-shirts, and leave the boring details to your cruise consultant.

When you book with a travel agent, they’re responsible for your booking, and all major changes need to be done through them. Things like changing cabins or requesting a price reduction, if the cost of your cruise drops before your final payment, will need to be done by your travel agent. Your cruise specialist will take care of everything you need, and manage all the reservations. If you’re planning a group cruise with friends or family (like a multi-generational cruise), the travel agent will work with each party to make sure all their questions are answered. In addition, they’ll coordinate dining reservations and cabin locations.

Barbados, a very British island, is also a port of call on a Southern Caribbean cruise. The capital city of Bridgetown even has its own Trafalger Square. Harrison'ss Cave, with it'ss 40 foot waterfall and massive cavern is a popular excursion and easily accessible by electric tram. Anyone who has cruised knows that it's the perfect combination of pampered relaxation and fun, fun, fun! Or, maybe your thirst for adventure has you snorkeling in crystal-clean Caribbean waters or soaring through the sky on a parasail. How about biking or horseback riding along a pristine sandy shore? See historic European cities, explore the unspoiled natural wonders of Alaska and Hawaii or "shop till you drop" at any of the duty free ports that you visit.

Barbados cruise port: docking, transportation and activity guide

barbados cruise port

Grantley Adams International Airport is located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of downtown, and offers daily flights to all major cities in the Caribbean, USA, Canada and the UK. Port Bridgetown cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bridgetown, Barbados. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link. When visiting this Caribbean destination, history buffs may opt to focus on admiring architecture and visiting museums or St. Mary’s Church, or touring the National Heroes Square and Parliament area. Historic Bridgetown is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there is plenty to admire and appreciate on a self-guided or formal excursion.

Long Beach, CA

Unfortunately, there are no public restrooms or lifeguards, so you may want to choose Brandons if you’re not planning to snorkel. The Bridgetown Fish Market is also exciting to visit, and it’s located just half a mile from the port. As you wander, you will also find numerous shops selling local cigars and rum, especially if you visit the Pelican Village Craft Center. Bridgetown Barbados cruise port terminal (aka "Deep Water Harbour") is operational since January 14, 1994. The port has 4 deepwater quays with capacity to accommodate up to 6 vessels at a time.

Folkestone Marine Park is located in Holetown, approximately 12 km/7.5 miles or a 20-minute drive north of the cruise port. If you go by bus, take bus 1B from Princess Alice Bus Terminal and get off at First Street, Holetown. Keep in mind there is not much within walking distance of the cruise terminal. The closest point of interest would be Bridgetown which is about 1 mile walk along the promenade.

Other ports of call:

The island's cultural blend of African, Indian, and British influences creates a fascinating blend of traditions, customs, and celebrations. Transportation options such as taxis and buses make it easy to get around the island and explore all that it has to offer. And when it comes time to shop or dine, Bridgetown has no shortage of options for both. For those who love handmade crafts, Pelican Craft Centre is a must-visit spot in Bridgetown.

In 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison were designated "UNESCO World Heritage Site". Some Cruise Critic members report using a $2 shuttle from the Bridgetown Barbados cruise port to downtown. Check with your specific cruise line to see if a shuttle is offered during your port visit. Obviously, all cruise lines offer many and diverse shore excursions in Barbados. Celebrity Cruises offers as many 34 shore excursions and Royal Caribbean has 37 cruise excursions.

Hike and Bike Tour

With equipment provided (wet suits available for rent), certified divers can dive between feet around shipwrecks, seeing beautiful reefs and sea life.... Welchman Hall Gully is a great location on the island for a hike like no other. It’s an almost mile-long cliff path that gives hikers an excellent overview of the verdant jungle. You can stroll around the exotic botanical gardens and appreciate the verdant greenery that is hard to find anywhere else on Earth. Andromeda’s Botanic Garden and Hunte’s Gardens are both beautiful botanical gardens in Barbados and welcome guests year-round (except holidays).

Bridgetown Barbados Cruise Port Guide and One Day Itinerary

Rarely, when all berths are occupied, cruise ships dock at the Esso (cargo) terminal. If you’re feeling inspired to get your learning cap on, you might want to head off on a walking tour of Bridgetown. This tour is super popular and gives a full history of the area as well as including several food stops (what is life without food pals, especially when you’re exploring somewhere new?). If you’re not feeling peckish, this two hour walking tour cuts out the food stops but includes more points of interest which you might not be able to learn about on your own.

Transportation and Getting Around: Guide to Explore Barbados

Barbados is a popular port of call on Eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries, and there's no wonder as to why. There are numerous things to do in Barbados which include something for everyone, from history buffs and foodies to naturalists and beachgoers. B'dos, as the locals call it, is brimming with culture, natural beauty, welcoming faces, delectable cuisine and beyond. If you have read any of my other Caribbean cruise port guides, you know I almost always recommend snorkeling. There is something so special about the warm, clear Caribbean waters that I cannot get enough of. When it comes to facilities, the cruise terminal in Barbados offers amenities like duty-free shops, Wi-Fi access, bathrooms for your convenience, and even a post office if you need to send out any mail.

There’s a taxi rank within the gates of Barbados cruise port, and you’ll also find more taxis waiting outside. If you’d rather pre-book something, here’s a shuttle service to Carlisle Bay which includes entrance to a beach club. For those seeking an adventure away from the beach, Welchman Hall Gully offers an opportunity to delve into the island's rich natural beauty. This tropical forest reserve provides a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

It's located on the opposite side of the island, which is about a 40-minute drive from the Barbados cruise port, so we recommend planning the day and renting a vehicle or booking a taxi.
